History
Leishmania is a genus of Trypanosome protozoa, which is responsible for the disease leishmaniasis. It is a parasitic disease that is mostly found in tropical to subtropical areas, and also southern Europe. There have been cases of it in the United States. Leishmaniasis can be a painful or painless disease to many humans, rodents, canids, or hyraxes. This parasite was named in 1903 after a Scottish pathologist William Boog Leishman, who is pictured at the right.SirLeishman.jpg William had discovered this new parasite after examining a spleen from a women who had recently died of Kala azar, and finding these new oval bodies, which caused this disease.


Origin
There are many origins to Leishmania but many are still unclear. Some say it may be from African origin, which migrated to the Americas. Another is a palearctic origin, which entails migration from a vector, reservoir or successive adaptations along the way to the Americas. The picture below indicates 34 Countries that have reported Leishmaniasis also having and HIV Co-Infection, mainly from using dirty needles. This disease currently affects 12 million people in 88 countries. This is just insane! It may be closer to home than you think!
